The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Young Musicians' Competition

Sunday 15th October 2006

Tippet Hall
St. Piran's School
Gringer Hill, Maidenhead

The Windsor & Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra Royal Borough Young Musician's Competition took place on Sunday 15th October at St. Piran's School, Maidenhead. There were thirteen competitors aged 14 to 19 coming from a wide area including a violinist from Goslar and two pianists from St. Cloud, twin towns of Windsor and Maidenhead. It proved to be a most fascinating musical experience as the standard of playing was exceptionally high. Each player played a short recital and the panel of three adjudicators, Leon Gee the orchestra's conductor, Robert Roscoe the orchestra's conductor laureate and the pianist and conductor Nigel Wilkinson had the unenviable task of deciding upon a winner. The first place was awarded to the tuba player Edward Leech who is from Crowthorne and now studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. Joint second place was awarded to the violinists Amy Tress who is at school at Wellington College and studies at the Junior Royal College of Music and Fra Rustumji who is a pupil at Kendrick School and studies at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. As the prize for winning the competition Edward will play a concerto with the orchestra in its 2007 -2008 season. Amy and Fra will also receive the opportunity to play with the orchestra.

The orchestra are most grateful to Sheargolds the specialist piano and guitar company who kindly sponsored the event by providing the grand piano.
